At Labuta Laureada, we believe that a good life is built through connection — to the land beneath our feet, to animals, to other people, to creativity, and to the simple rhythms of everyday life.
We are creating a place where these things can exist together. A working piece of countryside, a home for animals, a place to make things, a space to learn, a retreat from the noise of modern life and a meeting point for people from different backgrounds and cultures.
Living with the land
We believe rural life isn’t something to be consumed as an experience. It is something to participate in.
That means getting your hands dirty, understanding where things come from, caring for animals, working with the seasons and accepting that nature doesn’t always follow our plans. We want to work with the landscape rather than against it, finding practical and creative ways to care for the land while allowing it to support the people and animals who live here.
Making, not just consuming
We are interested in making things that have meaning.
From working with bamboo and other natural materials to creating music, growing ideas and sharing skills, we value the knowledge that comes from doing things ourselves. Our sustainable products, workshops and courses are all part of this approach — encouraging people to learn, experiment, repair, create and discover what they can do with their own hands and imagination.
Animals as teachers
Our animals are not simply part of the scenery. They are part of the community.
Working with horses in particular creates opportunities for patience, awareness, communication and trust. Through equicoaching and everyday interaction with the animals, we explore the relationship between people, animals and the environment around them.
Learning through experience
We believe some of the most valuable learning happens outside a classroom.
A residential music workshop, a day spent working with horses, learning to make something from bamboo, helping on the land or sharing skills around a table can all become opportunities for growth. We want Labuta Laureada to be a place where people can teach, learn, exchange and collaborate — regardless of where they come from or what they already know.
A space for exchange
We believe diversity makes places richer.
Our volunteer programme, rural stays, creative residencies and workshops bring together people with different skills, stories and perspectives. We don’t expect everyone to arrive with the same ideas. Quite the opposite — we want Labuta Laureada to be a place where different worlds can meet and something unexpected can grow from the encounter.
Sustainability as a practice
For us, sustainability isn’t a fashionable word or a badge to put on a website. It is an ongoing process of asking better questions.
How can we use fewer resources? What can we make locally? What can be repaired, reused or repurposed? How can we care for the land and animals while creating something economically viable? How can rural life and contemporary creativity support one another?
We won’t always get everything right. But we believe in trying, learning and improving.
Slow down. Get involved. Make something.
Ultimately, Labuta Laureada is about creating space — space to breathe, to think, to work, to play, to learn and to connect.
It is a place where a volunteer might spend the morning with the horses and the afternoon making something from bamboo. Where a musician can spend a week developing an album surrounded by mountains. Where a traveller can experience rural Portugal beyond the usual tourist trail. Where people can arrive as strangers and leave having shared something meaningful.
We don’t have all the answers. We’re building the experiment as we go.
And perhaps that’s the point.
Labuta Laureada is a place to live, learn, create and grow — together, and in connection with the land.
